2008-2010 FG Falcon XR6 Turbo Sedan

The FG Falcon XR6 Turbo sedan is a tribute to Aussie ingenuity. The ability to punch well above its weight and for a relatively affordable price.

It's a time honoured tradition in Australia to take a standard family sedan, add 'go fast' bits, tart it up with spoilers and side skirts to produce a performance special.

Maybe its looks are a little plain Jane, but those looks hide a full-fledged performance package that will keep many a European sports sedan honest.

There's a lot to like about the XR6 Turbo; it's a full-sized six-cylinder family car that will comfortably seat five. It's cheap to service and easy to maintain, with parts being so readily available even a shagged one will be reasonably cheap to resurrect.

Set yourself a budget of around $14,000 AUD will see you behind the wheel of an example with less than 150K on the clock, nothing for a well maintained big six.

For your spend, you'll get an Aussie engineered and built 4.0-litre turbocharged intercooled inline six cylinder engine thumping out 270kW @ 5250rpm and an even more impressive 533Nm of torque between 2000-4750rpm. The party doesn't stop there; you get a decent infotainment system, Bluetooth, SAT NAV, Reverse camera, sports seats, leather trim (optional), cruise control and 18" alloy wheels.

The 0 to 100km/h dash is done and dusted in a highly respectable 5.5 seconds, gold!

Just remember, the XR6 is a performance sedan and may have had a hard life, if you buy private, it's a smart move to have the car inspected by your States Automobile Association before purchase. It may save you a world of hurt.

After you've found your dream XR6 Turbo, take it for a blast through the Adelaide hills, you'll be keeping up with your mates S4, smiling all the while that you spent less than a third of what he did.
